Understanding Barriers to Sexual Health Service Utilization among Young People in Dang, Nepal: A Qualitative Exploration
Abstract
This qualitative study explores the barriers to the utilization of sexual health services among young people in District Dang, Nepal. Despite the availability of sexual health resources, many youths face significant obstacles in accessing these services, which impacts their overall sexual health and well-being. Through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with adolescents and young adults, as well as healthcare providers and community leaders, this research identifies key factors that hinder service utilization. The study reveals a range of barriers, including stigma and social taboos surrounding sexual health, lack of awareness and education, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and cultural and gender norms that restrict open discussion and access. Additionally, the findings highlight the role of family and peer influences in shaping attitudes towards sexual health services. The insights gained from this study underscore the need for targeted interventions to address these barriers, enhance sexual health education, and improve service delivery mechanisms. By addressing the root causes of non-utilization, stakeholders can better support young people in accessing vital sexual health services, ultimately promoting healthier outcomes and empowering youth in District Dang.
