The Impact of Ethnic Diversity on Social Cohesion and Victimization in Malaysian Neighborhoods
Abstract
This study investigates the impact of ethnic diversity on social cohesion and victimization within Malaysian neighborhoods. Malaysia's rich ethnic mosaic presents a unique context for examining how varying levels of ethnic diversity influence community dynamics, social integration, and experiences of victimization. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research combines quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to assess social cohesion and patterns of victimization across neighborhoods with different ethnic compositions. The study explores how ethnic diversity affects residents' perceptions of safety, community trust, and social solidarity. Findings reveal that while ethnic diversity can foster a rich cultural environment, it also presents challenges for social cohesion and can influence victimization rates. The results highlight the need for targeted interventions to strengthen community bonds and address crime in diverse neighborhoods. The study provides insights into how ethnic diversity shapes social interactions and suggests practical measures to enhance social cohesion and reduce victimization in multiethnic settings.
